A Complete Bibliography of Fencing and Duelling: As Practiced by All European Nations from the Middle Ages to the Present Day
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (January, 1999)
Author: Carl A. Thimm
Average review score:

A USEFUL AND INTERESTING REFERENCE VOLUME
Thimm's bibliography is one of the unique fencing related volumes of the nineteenth century. Along with Castle's "Schools and Masters of Fence," it should be in every fencing library. As the author of "The Art and Science of Fencing," "The Inner Game of Fencing," and "The Encyclopedia of the Sword;" and the Editor-in-Chief of FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE, I recommend it.

An invaluable listing of our Western martial heritage
Thimm offers the most complete listing of historical fencing manuals and was one of the most thorough of Victorian era sword scholars. Most importnatly his material lists texts which actually still exist today and are being studied once again. - John Clements, HACA Director

Consciously Creating Each Day: A 365 Day Perpetual Calendar of Spirited Thought from Voices Past and Present
Published in Spiral-bound by Moment Point Press, Inc. (07 May, 1998)
Author: Susan Ray
Average review score:

This is a great calendar!!
The quotes are from multitudinous, eclectic sources. It is nice to see so many teachers in agreement that we create our own reality.

Inspiring and empowering quotations
What I really love about this collection of quotations is how widely divergent their sources are. They range from traditional authors and views to those more unconventional and offer an eclectic mix of religious and spiritual traditions and new age concepts -- kudos to the editor. An excellent, well thought-out mix which opens the reader to all kinds of spiritual possibilities, while always focusing on the empowering idea of inner consciousness and the way it affects our lives and perceptions. As you read each day's quote, you realize over several days that a theme is emerging, and often one theme leads into the next in interesting, unexpected ways. I have a number of quotation collections and this one is by far the most diverse and well-arranged. I have found that there is real depth in the themes, and for me, an uncanny sense that each quote concerns some aspect of my spiritual growth on the day I read it. Another great aspect of this calendar is that each quote is footnoted so you can go to the source and read the text from which the quote was taken -- an invaluable resource, and one that very few quotation books or calendars employ. I also prefer the calendar form to that of a book because the calendar stays open. All you have to do is flip the page, not pull out a book and open it. In a perpetual calendar, no days of the week are associated with the dates, so when the year is over you start again. I highly recommend this inspiring calendar of quotations -- you won't be disappointed.

The Consciousness Revolution: A Transatlantic Dialogue: Two Days With Stanislav Grof, Ervin Laszlo, and Peter Russell
Published in Hardcover by Harper Collins - UK (September, 1999)
Authors: Ervin Laszlo, Stanislav Grof, and Peter Russell
Average review score:

A remarkable and invaluable book
A remarkable and invaluable trialogue between three of the most remarkable minds of our times.

An invaluable contribution towards the development of a species that wants to survive in a peaceful coexistence with all of nature.

Should get back in print as soon as possible.

Come on over for dinner!
For several years now I have been reading these three great men. They have been trying to explain it as I have been trying to understand. I now understand. I understand that we have to listen to these geniuses' Genesis to a new way of consciousness.

This is a dialogue between three spirits. Inter-resting that it is dialogue, in the true sense, but between three. And so it spreads.

I am only a simple mother waiting to be a grandmother but I can COOK! You bring great food for thought and new recipies for the family of man.

Peter Russell has a new book out available at his site...go there...I did and plan to read it. I consider all these men as Great Chefs and I am following instructions to the Cook.

Conversational Italian in Seven Days

Authors: Shirley Baldwin and Sarah Boas

Addendum to Review From San Jose, California
If you want to get the tapes that accompany this book, then do a search on: "Conversational Italian in 7 Days". (If you write "7" instead of spelling out "seven" another version of this book comes up. This version includes the language tapes for just a few more dollars.

Believe me, you really need the tapes. And you'll really enjoy them. Italian is a beautifully-sounding lanugage to pronounce. And the tapes make it easy and fun.

Ciao!

Necessary for survival in Italy anywhere outside of Rome
I recently returned from Italy after reading this book and listing to the two language tapes that accompany it. The book and tapes cover everyday subjects which arise during your trip to Italy. How to buy things in stores. How to ask directions. How to order from a menu. How to make reservations. How to talk about yourself and carry on a basic conversation. It also gives travel advice on how to use the public telephone, buy parking tokens and other juicy tidbits that will make your vacation a lot easier. (Italy is not a very efficent country, and everyday situations can become a lot more complicated than you could ever have imagined!)

When we were in Rome I found that about 95% of all Italians spoke fluent English. Most of them did not even tolerate my attempts at speaking Italian. But when we traveled to Tuscany, Florence, and the outlying Veneitian islands this book became very useful.

I highly recommend it as a succinct surivial guide if you're planning to go to Italy. I also thought that the tapes were excellent and the lessons well planned and pertinent. I carried this book with me during my trip for reference.

It will definitely help you learn some basic surivial Italian quickly and easily.

Corduroy's Day: A Counting Book
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (May, 1985)
Authors: Lisa McCue, Don Freeman, and Lydia Freeman
Average review score:

Corduroy the Bear
I think this book is a great book to start with. It is a good way of learning to count and how to read. I also think that who ever reads this book they will enjoy it very much because of the bear looks very friendly and nice.

My son's favorite book!
I loved Corduroy as a kid, so I figured my son would like him as well. This book is my son's absolute favorite. At 10-months old, he crawls to his bookshelf, grabs this book, and insists I read it to him again, and again, and again. He especially likes pointing out Corduroy, and is catching on to the counting. I will ask him to point out the books, or the milk, bread or honey, or the rag doll, and he can actually do it! The colors of the book really catch his eye. What a nice way to introduce reading to my young one. I will be buying additional Corduroy board books!

Cy Twombly: Fifty Days at Iliam
Published in Hardcover by Distributed Art Publishers (June, 1991)
Average review score:

Not for all, apparently
For those who see art work as merely pictures.. Cy Twombly's work is obviously not for them. People don't understand that with some artists.. it's not the work that is the art. It is the artist and their passion. At first I didn't understand his work when I walked into his fifty day exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I saw it and thought "What did these people see to put his work in here? If he has this work in the museum.. then maybe I've got a chance." So I decided that I'd sit for a while and try to understand it. And finally I did. His.. pieces aren't the artwork.. it was the passion that was put into them that is the artwork. And passion.. in the art domain.. conquers all, in my opinion.

my six-year-old could do this.... if he was a Genius, maybe.
cy twombly is amazing. i love '50 Days at Iliam'... it makes me so incredibly happy to own and look at this book.

Daily Disciples : Growing Every Day As a Follower of Christ
Published in Hardcover by Barbour & Co (January, 2001)
Authors: Jeffrey A. Leever, David D. Wardel, Dave Wardell, and Ellyn Sanna
Average review score:

Good book for anyone
Worth the cost. Warm and personal, yet firm and straightforward. The authors take on the subject of Christians living each day as a disiciple of Christ (instead of just letting disciples be "those other guys"). I was particularly intrigued at the outset by the intro written by Dee Brestin (Heritage Keepers) and the foreword by Bill McCartney (Promise Keepers). Then, the chapters take off from there and go further. Again a good book. Looking forward to doing the Daily Disciples study guide book in my group.

Excellent Resource
DAILY DISCIPLES grabs you in the Prologue and continues on --making good points chapter after chapter. There's also pointed discussion questions at the end of each section. The best Christian Living book I have read this year.

Author: Daily Guideposts
Average review score:

The Spirit Lifting Gift of Daily Guideposts
This is a favorite gift with my family and friends -- one which we have been sharing among ourselves for the past 20+ years. I grew up with these devotional writers and have come to think of them as members of the family. Their shared experiences of the trials, tribulations, joys and glories of living a faith-based life and their daily walk with the Lord has been a blessing for me and I hope for you!

Help for the Daily Grind
How would I ever survive without my copy of the Daily Guideposts? I have been using this annual series for over 12 years now Making sure I keep all old copies) and my day is not complete without reading the day's offering. Each day my spirits are lifted and I can face the day with my worries lightened and my outlook brightened. I highly recommend this book for Christian and non-Christian alike.

Daily Negations: A Malcontent's Book of Meditation for Every Interminable Day of the Year
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (December, 1996)
Authors: Barbara Lagowski and Rick Mumma
Average review score:

Ever laughed at a dark thought? This book's for you!
The line between comedy and tragedy is very thin in Daily Negations. Every day features a new, grim thought to bring you back down to earth if you were feeling a little too good about yourself. But the humor is so raw and edgy--and genuinely funny--that you won't resent it a bit

Great daily remedies for mindless optimism.
Read one of these if you've overdosed on Kathie Lee

Daily Prayer 2002: A Book of Psalms, Sacred Reading and Reflection in Tune with the Seasons, Feasts and Ordinary Days of the Year
Published in Paperback by Liturgy Training Publications (02 April, 2001)
Author: Bryan M. Cones
Average review score:

Insightful guide
I am looking forward to using Daily Prayer 2002 which I received as a gift. Just by browing through it, I can see the effort and creative thinking that went into this well-written guide for your prayerful walk with God.

From the author
Daily Prayer 2002 contains an order of prayer for each day of the Catholic liturgical year, from the First Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2001, to November 30, 2002. Each day includes a psalm, scripture reading, reflection and prayers. Each page is dated and includes the particular day's observance (weekdays, Sundays, feasts of saints, and so forth). It is inspired by the Roman Catholic tradition of daily prayer, including the liturgy of the hours and the monastic practice of "lectio divina," or holy reading, and tries to make those traditions accessible today.
